Other names or terms for USB flash drives –

USB flash drives provide a super easy way to store and transfer files, movies, mp3’s, tv shows, and any data.
Over the years, these have been called a good number of different names to go along with their many different styles and uses.

Even though they may be the same exact product, here are some examples of the names that are used:

• USB flash drive
• Memory drive
• Thumb drive
• Jump drive
• Key chain drive
• Pen drive
• Data stick

These portable storage devices are often the size of a human thumb (like about the size of a pack of gum) and connect to most computers through a USB port. They are available with different memory sizes ranging from 64MB (megabytes) to 1TB (terabyte) and can conveniently reprogrammed or reformatted.

Unlike a standard hard drive (hdd) found in a desktop computer, a flash drive has no moveable parts. This is called Solid State or SSD.

These only contain a flash memory chip and an integrated PCB circuit board used to store data. And these have a customizable plastic or brushed aluminum casing which surrounds the memory chip and USB connector. Also can make PVC custom shape molds
from certain vendors and/or suppliers.

Flash drives can be used like any hard drive on a computer or MAC. When one is inserted into a USB port, a window would pop up or you would the open “My Computer” and you should see a drive labeled “Removable Disk”, “Flash Drive”, or a different name that the unit may have been given by the manufacturer.
You can then copy and paste or drag & drop any file onto the flash drive. Or vice-versa, any file from the thumb drive onto
your pc or MAC.

You don’t need to worry about which drive letter will be assigned to it, your computer or MAC will do this automatically.

Before flash drives, we used 3.5″ floppy disks and then on to CDs and DVDs to store and backup data. Today though, in addition to the Cloud, we are using USB flash drives for reasons & purposes like below:
